Jim Scott MBE - Our President, Our Friend

It was with much sadness that we learned of the passing of our President, founding member, former chairman, champion ploughman, record-setting charity collector and dear friend, Jim Scott on 20 April 2019.

Jim’s involvement with the Mid Ulster Vintage Vehicles Club stretches back to the very beginning.  Jim and his wife Jean, were among a small group of people who met in 1975 to form a club, aimed at preserving vintage vehicles and encouraging their continued use.

Jim was an agricultural contractor and then plant hire contractor, resulting in a long term interest in all types of vehicles including tractors, diggers, dozers, lorries and motorcycles.  Jim’s commitment to the Club and interest in vintage vehicles was rewarded in 2001 when he was awarded an MBE for services to the community and the preservation of vintage vehicles.

An accomplished ploughman, Jim helped organise our club matches since the beginning and competed in and won matches throughout Northern Ireland and further afield, representing the Club wherever he went.  Jim was also ever present throughout 42 vintage rallies held at Springhill, Moneymore, doing whatever needed to be done and encouraging others to get involved in showing vehicles or helping out.

However, it was our Two Day Vintage Tractor Trek where Jim really came into his own.  In his younger years, he was a regular driver on the 100 mile trek and an excellent collector of funds, no matter what the charity.  In the years since he retired from contracting, Jim redoubled his efforts and became a truly outstanding collector and each year regularly collected over £10,000.

Up to 2018, Jim was personally responsible for collecting over £211,000 on behalf of the Club for a range of good causes.  This is a monumental effort for one person and in recent years, even with one and sometimes two crutches, Jim’s efforts never faded and are all the more impressive.

An active member until very recently, Jim will be sadly missed by all who knew him and all he had an impact on through funds donated by the Club.  He was always on hand to provide advice and yet was very keen to hear everyone else’s opinion.  He was a friend to many and his passing will leave a pair of boots that will never be filled.

Our sympathies, thoughts and prayers are with Club members Jean, Sidney, Emma, Leah, Jason and Ernie and the wider Scott family.
